My Story from Project Manager to Product Designer: Embracing the Challenge
At my previous role at Darwynn, a fast-paced startup, I wore many hats as a project manager, working closely with clients to deliver results. But it was an unexpected challenge that truly shaped my career path.
The company needed a marketing website—fast. With no dedicated designer on board, I saw an opportunity to step up. Although my primary role was project management, I had been learning Figma and UX design process on the side, fueled by an interest in design. I volunteered to take on the task, despite having no prior experience with WordPress.
It was a steep learning curve, but I thrive under pressure and love a good challenge. Within three weeks, I designed and built a six-page website from scratch. I taught myself WordPress, applied my budding UX skills, created Sitemaps and wireframes with Figma before translating the Figma design into a working site with wordpress.
The result? My employer was incredibly impressed. They entrusted me with maintaining, updating, and redesigning the website alongside my project management responsibilities. I ensured the site was not only functional but also visually appealing and aligned with the company’s brand. Balancing both roles was demanding, but it was during this time that I discovered my true passion: product design.
I realized that design wasn’t just a side interest—it was where I wanted to focus my career. To deepen my expertise, I made the decision to leave my job and pursue a professional diploma in UX design from BrainStation. This program allowed me to refine my skills, learn industry-standard tools, and immerse myself in the world of user-centered design.
Looking back, that initial challenge at Darwynn was the catalyst for my transition into product design. It taught me the value of adaptability, the importance of embracing opportunities, and the power of pursuing what you’re truly passionate about. Today, I’m excited to bring my unique blend of project management experience and UX design expertise to create impactful, user-focused digital products.
